GRAND FORKS, N.D. (trfnews.i234.me) – A 36-year-old man was arrested after a prolonged standoff with Grand Forks Police Department in North Dakota. The incident began when officers were dispatched to a residence on Cherry Street due to reports of suicidal comments made by the individual.
Initially, phone contact was established with the subject, who claimed not to be at home and did not wish any medical assistance. However, later that afternoon, police returned to the scene after being informed that the man had continued making suicidal statements.
Upon arrival, officers attempted to establish verbal communication with the man, who stated he was armed with a knife and refused to surrender voluntarily. Despite efforts by negotiators from the Crisis Negotiations Team (CNT) and Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS), the subject remained uncooperative.
To de-escalate the situation, members of the Grand Forks Regional SWAT team deployed light sound diversionary devices on two separate occasions in an attempt to distract the man. Additionally, a chemical agent was used to encourage him to exit the residence.
After several hours, the man eventually exited the house and was taken into custody without further incident. He was transported to Altru Hospital for a mental health evaluation before being transferred to the Grand Forks County Correctional Center to face charges of Felonious Restraint and Resisting Arrest (Felony).
