Mahnomen County (https://trfnews.i234.me) – A 26-year-old Naytahwaush woman is facing a gross misdemeanor charge after allegedly calling 911 to falsely request backup during a traffic stop in an attempt to avoid citations.
According to a criminal complaint, on October 12, 2024, a Mahnomen County deputy pulled over a vehicle near County Roads 3 and 6 for multiple violations:
-
Headlights were off
-
Failure to stop at a posted stop sign
-
No rear license plate illumination
-
Expired registration (February 2024)
The driver, identified as Mykee Lynn Brown, told the deputy the car belonged to her sister and was likely uninsured. A young child in the back seat was also not properly restrained, prompting the deputy to ask for the child’s information.
Brown became confrontational, refused to provide the child’s name, rolled up her window, and called 911 dispatch twice, falsely suggesting the deputy was “too aggressive” and requesting another officer. She also called White Earth Police Dispatch, trying to get a tribal officer to intervene, despite there being no actual emergency.
Deputy Saunders eventually told Brown she was free to go if she provided the child’s name, which she finally did.
Brown now faces the following charges:
-
Count I: Placing a Fictitious Emergency 911 Call (Gross Misdemeanor)
– Maximum: 364 days in jail and/or $3,000 fine -
Count II: Driving Without Proof of Insurance (Misdemeanor)
-
Count III: No Rear Plate Illumination (Petty Misdemeanor)
-
Count IV: Failure to Stop for Stop Sign (Petty Misdemeanor)
A summons has been issued for Brown to appear in Mahnomen County District Court.
