What happened

A Cass County deputy went to a home in Longville on February 20, 2026. The call was a “removal” request, according to the complaint. The deputy found the victim at the end of the driveway. The victim was barefoot and upset.

The victim told law enforcement that Smith had been drinking. The victim said an argument started inside the home. The victim said Smith warned he would slap them. The victim said Smith then slapped them.

The complaint says Smith also slammed the victim’s head into a bedroom window. The victim then moved into the living room. Family members were present there, the complaint says.

Choking allegation during 911 call

The victim said they later went to the bathroom to call 911. The complaint says Smith followed them. The complaint says Smith began choking the victim. The victim said they struggled to breathe. The victim said they started to hyperventilate.

The deputy reported significant red bruising on the left side of the victim’s neck. The complaint also describes a hole in a bedroom wall. The deputy believed it came from a punch.

What Smith told investigators

Smith told law enforcement the victim was upset with him, the complaint says. Smith claimed the victim choked him first. He said he could still breathe. The deputy reported no visible neck marks on Smith.

Court and bail

Prosecutors filed the case on February 23, 2026, court records show. The charges were issued by an order of detention.

Judge Christopher J. Strandlie set bail at $1,000 cash with conditions. The judge also listed two other options. One option was $30,000 without conditions. Another option was a $10,000 bond with conditions.
