Kidder County, North Dakota ( trfnews.i234.me ) – A deadly crash on Interstate 94 has left one man dead and another critically injured early Thursday morning.

According to the North Dakota Highway Patrol, the crash happened at 6:40 a.m. on August 28 near mile marker 196 eastbound, close to Steele. Road conditions were dry at the time, but fog created limited visibility.

Authorities say a 2012 Nissan Versa was traveling eastbound in the passing lane at a high rate of speed when it struck the rear of a 2023 Subaru Crosstrek. The impact caused catastrophic damage to both vehicles.

The 20-year-old driver of the Nissan Versa, from Bismarck, was not wearing a seatbelt and died at the scene. The driver of the Subaru Crosstrek, a 63-year-old man from New Meadows, Idaho, suffered life-threatening injuries. He was transported by ambulance to a local hospital for emergency treatment.

Multiple agencies responded, including the North Dakota Highway Patrol, Kidder County Sheriff’s Office, Steele Fire Department, Kidder Ambulance, Metro Area Ambulance, North Dakota Game and Fish, and the North Dakota Department of Transportation.

The Highway Patrol continues to investigate the circumstances of the crash. Officials are reminding drivers about the dangers of speeding and the importance of wearing seatbelts. Learn more about seatbelt safety here.

This remains an active investigation. Further updates will be released as more information becomes available from authorities.
