Hennepin County Basketball Assault: Player Beaten With Tire Iron in Brutal Attack

NEW HOPE, MN (trfnews.i234.me)—A high school basketball game in Hennepin County turned into a horrifying scene when a player was violently assaulted on the bench. The incident occurred on January 28 at Robbinsdale Cooper High School in New Hope, during a matchup against Fridley High School.

Authorities report that several individuals stormed the gym and targeted a 17-year-old Fridley player, brutally attacking him. According to court documents, the victim was struck on the head with a metal tire iron, punched multiple times, and nearly stabbed. The teenager sustained a severe laceration that required six staples to close and was rushed to the hospital by ambulance.

Three suspects have been formally charged in Hennepin County Court on January 30:

  • Dursa Muktar Mohamed (18, Brooklyn Park)
  • Yahya Abdul Khanyare (18, Brooklyn Park)
  • Ayub Mohamed Ali (19, Circle Pines)

All three face second-degree assault and second-degree riot charges, while Mohamed is also charged with fleeing police. Two additional suspects, including a 16-year-old, have also been arrested in connection with the attack.

Caught on Camera: A Calculated Attack

Court filings reveal that surveillance footage captured the group arriving in a red sedan, retrieving weapons from the car, and entering the gym illegally. Bypassing ticketed entry points, the group moved directly toward the victim.

Khanyare is accused of rushing the victim and striking him on the head with the tire iron while others in the group joined in the attack. Teammates and coaches intervened before the attackers fled the scene.

High-Speed Chase Ends in Arrests

Responding officers quickly located the suspects’ vehicle and attempted to initiate a traffic stop. However, the driver attempted to flee, leading to a car crash while trying to enter a freeway. All five suspects were arrested at the scene.

As of January 31, the three adult suspects remain in Hennepin County Jail, with initial court appearances taking place on Friday afternoon. Police emphasize that the attack was targeted, not random, but have not disclosed a possible motive.
