Two children were killed. Seventeen other people were injured. Fourteen of the injured are children. Three are older parishioners. Most are expected to survive, according to officials.
Police say the gunman fired from outside the church. Shots came through windows into pews with children and worshippers. Investigators believe dozens of rounds were fired.
The suspect is identified as 23-year-old Robin Westman. Police say Westman died from a self-inflicted wound behind the church. Authorities believe the attacker acted alone.
Officials say a rifle, a shotgun, and a pistol were used. The firearms were purchased legally and recently, according to police. A smoke device was also recovered at the scene.
Families were directed to the reunification site at Annunciation Catholic School, 525 W. 54th Street. The church address is 509 W. 54th Street. The parish school serves preschool through eighth grade on the same campus.
Leaders called the attack “incomprehensible” and asked the public to support the families. They urged people to avoid the area so medics and investigators can work.
Police are executing multiple search warrants linked to the suspect. Officials say a video and writings tied to the shooter were taken down with federal help. The FBI is assisting and reviewing hate-crime and domestic-terrorism angles.
