Harvest Safety Reminder: Slow Down Before You Pass

On October 29, an injury crash occurred on Highway 11 between I-29 and Fairmount when a Chevrolet Equinox attempted to pass several vehicles that were slowing for a semi turning left into a field approach. The Equinox collided with the semi as it was making the turn. The driver of the Equinox sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

As harvest continues across North Dakota, drivers should expect to encounter farm equipment, trucks and other slow-moving vehicles entering and exiting fields.

A few important reminders:

* Slowing traffic doesn’t always mean it’s safe to pass. Vehicles ahead may be preparing to turn.
* Watch for turn signals. Farm equipment and trucks frequently turn into field approaches that may be difficult to see from a distance.
* Avoid passing multiple vehicles at once. You may not be able to see why traffic ahead is slowing.
* Be patient. Waiting a few extra seconds for a safe opportunity to pass can prevent a serious crash.

During harvest, a field approach can be just as busy as an intersection. Pay attention to what’s happening ahead, not just the vehicle directly in front of you.

A few seconds of patience can prevent a lifetime of consequences.

  1. Happened to me
Exept In my case the semi guy was driving 5 miles an hour on his phone
And of course, when I wanted to pass, he sped up and made the left turn and hit me
I learned not to be so impatient, even if the guy was going 5 miles an hour
I should’ve just slowed down, pulled over and had my lunch
