Grand Forks: Woman Charged After Kicking Officer at Mission
Grand Forks (trfnews.i234.me) — A homeless woman is facing multiple charges after allegedly kicking a police officer and resisting arrest at the Northlands Rescue Mission, according to court documents.
Janette R. Diaz, listed as homeless in Grand Forks, has been charged with felony simple assault on a peace officer, along with misdemeanor counts of preventing arrest and disorderly conduct. The incident occurred on the evening of October 9, 2025, when officers were called to the Northlands Rescue Mission for a report of a woman refusing to leave the property.
According to the criminal complaint, staff at the Mission told police that Diaz had been previously trespassed from the facility but returned intoxicated and was causing a disturbance. When officers arrived, they reported that Diaz was yelling profanities and refusing commands to leave. At one point, Diaz allegedly took a fighting stance and told officers, “I can box you right now.”
Police say Diaz resisted when they attempted to arrest her, kicking at officers during the struggle. She was eventually restrained and taken into custody. No serious injuries were reported.
Under North Dakota law, assaulting a peace officer is a Class C felony, carrying a potential penalty of up to five years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000 if convicted. Diaz also faces additional penalties on the misdemeanor charges.
The Grand Forks Police Department reminds the public that interfering with or assaulting law enforcement officers is a serious offense and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. For more information on North Dakota assault laws, visit the North Dakota Century Code.
