Grand Forks, North Dakota (trfnews.i234.me) — The defense attorney for Travis Bell, accused in a fatal crash near the Grand Forks airport, has filed a motion to move the trial out of Grand Forks. Attorney Mark Friese argues that the extensive public campaign led by the victim’s family, including social media outreach and public demonstrations, could prevent a fair trial.
Bell faces charges of criminal vehicular homicide and injury following a June 2024 collision that resulted in the death of 6-year-old Katarina Louthain and serious injuries to her mother, Nicole. A judge recently ruled to suppress Bell’s chemical breath test results, citing concerns over how the evidence was obtained.
In response to the defense’s motion, Nicole Louthain stated that her efforts are aimed at seeking justice and raising awareness, not influencing the trial’s outcome. She emphasized the importance of community support and transparency in the legal process.
The court has yet to decide on the venue change request. Bell’s trial is currently scheduled for August 12, 2025.

In North Dakota, a change of trial venue can be granted if pretrial publicity is deemed likely to prevent a fair and impartial trial.
