Grand Forks Police Investigate Machete Incident Ending in Self-Harm

GRAND FORKS, ND (trfnews.i234.me) – Grand Forks Police are investigating a disturbing incident that occurred on Thursday at 10:10 p.m. Officers were called to the area of 400 Demers Avenue in response to a report of a male subject threatening people with a machete. A male resident, who was riding a scooter in the area, reported that an unknown male swung a machete at him. He was not struck or injured and managed to escape.

The suspect continued to swing the machete at others in the vicinity. When officers arrived, they found the suspect still holding the machete. They attempted to de-escalate the situation verbally. During the encounter, the suspect put the machete to his own throat and inflicted a cut on himself. He then dropped the weapon and collapsed. Officers provided immediate aid until paramedics arrived and transported him to Altru Hospital for medical treatment. His current condition is unknown.

At no point did officers use force against the suspect, and no one else was injured during the incident. The investigation is ongoing, and while no criminal charges have been filed yet, they may be considered pending further investigation. The suspect’s identity is being withheld due to the mental health nature of the call.
