Grand Forks (trfnews.i234.me) — In a Grand Forks District Court ruling, Cazmere Haskins has been sentenced to 40 years in prison, followed by three years of probation, for the murder of 24-year-old Anthony Economy. Haskins, who previously pleaded guilty in a plea deal, has also been ordered to pay $2,413 in restitution to the victim’s family.
The fatal stabbing took place last March in the parking lot of an apartment complex on 36th Avenue South. Court documents detail how a group of individuals had arranged to meet for a physical altercation due to relationship disputes. Surveillance footage captured Haskins brandishing a silver straight-blade knife and displaying it multiple times throughout the fight.
During the altercation, Haskins stabbed Economy once in the chest, a wound that proved fatal. Further evidence includes Snapchat images allegedly sent by Haskins, showing the suspected murder weapon with a red substance on the blade. Upon his arrest, Haskins claimed self-defense but later confessed to the stabbing under Miranda rights.
Originally charged as a juvenile, Haskins was later tried as an adult due to the severity of the crime. At just 18 years old, he now faces decades behind bars for the deadly confrontation.
