Grand Forks (trfnews.i234.me) – A Grand Forks man is facing a felony theft charge after his latest shoplifting arrest earlier this month.

According to court documents, Daniel Robert Nelson was arrested on September 8 after allegedly stealing from a deli in Grand Forks. Investigators say he walked out of the business without paying for merchandise valued at $48.41.

While the amount was under $50, the charge was elevated to a felony because Nelson had at least three prior shoplifting convictions. Under North Dakota law, a fourth or subsequent shoplifting offense may be prosecuted as felony theft of property.

Authorities filed the case in Grand Forks County District Court. Nelson is charged with felony theft of property, which carries heavier penalties than misdemeanor theft. His initial court appearance is expected in the coming weeks.

Officials say repeat shoplifting offenses remain a significant issue for local businesses, with repeat offenders facing more severe charges to deter future thefts.
