Grand Forks County ( trfnews.i234.me ) – A Grand Forks man is facing a felony domestic violence charge after an early morning incident on August 24, according to court documents.
Police say they were dispatched at 1:26 a.m. after receiving reports of a woman screaming for help. When officers arrived, they spoke with the victim, a female family member of James John Mayerhofer.
The victim told investigators she had been drinking with Mayerhofer and another man at a local bar. On the way home, Mayerhofer allegedly became upset. When she got out of the vehicle, he reportedly choked her for about five seconds before letting go, causing her to fall to the ground.
A witness at the scene corroborated her account of the incident. Mayerhofer was later arrested and charged with felony domestic violence. Learn more about North Dakota domestic violence laws here.
