Grand Forks (trfnews.i234.me) — A multi‑vehicle crash on the Columbia Road overpass near the University of North Dakota blocked traffic Tuesday morning.

What Happened

Just before 8:00 a.m., a northbound van driven by Michael Johnson lost control on the icy overpass. The van slid into the southbound lanes and struck two other vehicles. One of those drivers was identified as Sarah Lee, and the other as David Martinez.

The Grand Forks Fire Department and EMS crews responded quickly to the crash. Bystanders helped check on the people involved while waiting for emergency crews to arrive.

Injuries and Response

One person was taken by a private vehicle to a local hospital to be checked for injuries. Fire officials say no one had life‑threatening injuries. All drivers were awake and talking when crews arrived.

The overpass was icy and slick at the time of the crash. According to the fire chief, road temperatures were below freezing. The City of Grand Forks sent sand trucks to treat the bridge surface.

Bridge Closure and Cleanup

The overpass was closed for about 40 minutes while crews cleared the crash scene and spread sand and salt to improve traction. Traffic delays affected the morning commute.

Drivers were urged to slow down and watch for ice on bridges and overpasses. The National Weather Service has warned that freezing temperatures can make elevated roads especially slick in winter months.
