Gary Woman Faces 3 Felonies in East Grand Forks Case

EAST GRAND FORKS, Minn. (trfnews.i234.me) — A Gary woman faces three felony charges involving dishonored checks.

Kelsey Rae Wastweet is charged with three counts of issuing dishonored checks.

The charges were filed in Polk County District Court.

Each count carries a possible five-year prison term, a $10,000 fine, or both.

Any sentence would depend on a conviction and a court ruling.

The charges are allegations. Wastweet is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.

Checks Linked to Gift Card Fundraiser

The case began after Sacred Heart School reported two checks tied to a gift card fundraiser.

According to the complaint, Wastweet used the checks to obtain gift cards through RaiseRight.

One check was for $996. Another check was for $9,750, the complaint states.

Both checks were returned with a message saying the account could not be located.

RaiseRight also reported two online gift card orders placed in August 2025.

Those orders totaled $8,400.

The complaint says that the account no longer exists.

Two related accounts had been closed in July 2018.

Records also showed many attempted transactions after the closure, according to the complaint.

Those attempted transactions totaled about $80,000.

Sports Apparel Purchase Also Cited

The third count involves a separate purchase from Stinger Bat Co.

The complaint says Wastweet ordered customized hockey apparel worth $1,929.95.

The company received a check from the same listed account on February 11, 2026.

Stinger Bat Co. later requested valid payment by May 10, the complaint states.

No payment had been completed by June 11, according to court documents.

Court Case Remains Pending

The complaint alleges Wastweet issued checks while intending that they would not be paid.
