WALKER, Minn. — A former employee of Reeds Family Outdoor Outfitters in Walker has been charged with 26 felony counts for allegedly stealing more than $40,000 in merchandise over a two-year period using fraudulent gift cards.

Kelsey Rutland, 38, of Lake George, is accused of adding funds to unused Reeds gift cards and using them to purchase firearms, accessories, and various outdoor gear between September 2021 and December 2023, according to court documents. Rutland reportedly resold many of the items through her home-based laser engraving business, JB Designs.

The investigation began in January 2024 when Reeds’ web team discovered suspicious activity linked to a family member of Rutland. Court documents reveal that Rutland had been manipulating gift cards by adding value and using them to buy high-end products, including firearms, Yeti tumblers, cookware, and grill accessories. She either kept these items for herself or shared the card information with others who made purchases.

One critical lead came when law enforcement traced the serial number of a firearm showcased on JB Designs’ Facebook page, leading to the discovery that Rutland had bought the gun with a Reeds gift card initially issued in 2021. The card had remained unused until Rutland’s transaction in 2023.

A search warrant executed at Rutland’s home uncovered several items purchased with fraudulent cards, including Yeti products and firearms. Rutland admitted during questioning that she knew her actions were illegal, stating that she used leftover gift card balances to obtain discounted products for family and friends.

The investigation has uncovered approximately 40 fraudulent transactions connected to Rutland dating back to 2021. Rutland now faces charges of racketeering, theft, and attempted theft. Her next court appearance is scheduled for November 4.
