Wakefield Township, Minnesota (trfnews.i234.me) — A tragic head-on collision occurred at 5:04 PM on February 24, 2025, on southbound Highway 23 at Milepost 189 in Wakefield Township, Stearns County.
According to the Minnesota State Patrol, a 2002 Chevy Trailblazer, driven by 52-year-old James Arthur Wilton of Fairchild, WI, was traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes of Highway 23 when it collided head-on with a 2023 Volkswagen Tiguan, driven by 35-year-old Greg John Steil of Richmond, MN.
Emergency responders from the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office, Cold Spring Police Department, Cold Spring Fire Department, and Mayo Ambulance arrived at the scene. Both drivers were pronounced deceased at the scene.
Authorities confirmed that both drivers were wearing seat belts and airbags deployed in both vehicles. At this time, it remains unknown if alcohol was a factor in the crash.
The Minnesota State Patrol has marked the investigation as complete.
