Cass County ( trfnews.i234.me ) – A former West Fargo elementary school principal has been sentenced to 40 years in federal prison for child sex abuse crimes. A judge said a life sentence would have been “sufficient.”On Monday, September 8, U.S. District Judge Peter Welte sentenced 41-year-old David Preston George after a binding plea deal. George pleaded guilty to transporting a minor across state lines for sexual abuse and to possessing and distributing child sex abuse material.

Investigators said George took a child from North Dakota to South Dakota in 2022 with plans to sexually abuse the victim. Law enforcement also found 224 images and 378 videos of child exploitation in his possession.

Welte called George’s actions “diabolical” and “shocking.” He noted federal sentencing guidelines called for life in prison, but the plea deal limited the punishment to 40 years. Welte told the court that life would have been sufficient.

Prosecutors said George also sexually abused a child he knew during the summer of 2022. Victims and their families gave emotional statements in court. A young boy testified he lost his childhood and feared George would harm his family if he spoke out.

The child’s mother called George a predator and manipulator who betrayed her family’s trust. She told the court George tried to blame neighbors and even hired a private investigator to discredit her son.

George apologized but appeared more concerned with his own losses, the judge said. Welte told the boy in court his life was precious and valuable, and thanked him for his courage in testifying.

George was arrested in August 2023 after initial charges in Cass County. He resigned as Independence Elementary School principal the same day. He had worked in West Fargo Public Schools since 2013, first as a teacher, then as an administrator.

George will remain in prison until at least his 70s. The binding plea deal avoided a trial and prevented further trauma for the victims, prosecutors said. See official U.S. Attorney’s Office updates.
