East Grand Forks (trfnews.i234.me) — A 23-year-old East Grand Forks man now faces a felony charge in Polk County. Court records say Jordan Michael Lavallie-Short was charged with domestic assault by strangulation after a reported incident on March 8, 2026.

According to the criminal complaint, police were sent to an apartment on 4th Avenue NW at about 5:30 a.m. The call involved a reported assault between a man and a woman. When officers arrived, they heard a woman crying inside the apartment.

Authorities say Lavallie-Short answered the door. Investigators later identified the alleged victim as T.T. The complaint says T.T. and Lavallie-Short shared a child and had been in a romantic relationship. That made her a family or household member under Minnesota law.

What the Complaint Says

The complaint states the argument began over a phone. Investigators say Lavallie-Short admitted he and T.T. were fighting. He also admitted putting his hands around her neck, according to the complaint.

Investigators wrote that Lavallie-Short said he lost control during the incident. The complaint says he told officers he was rougher than he should have been. He also admitted he knew he was choking T.T., according to court records.

The complaint says T.T. told officers that Lavallie-Short choked her and that she could not breathe. She also said she wanted to press charges. The report states that a young child was present during the assault.

Charge and Court Details

Lavallie-Short is charged with one count of domestic assault by strangulation. That charge is a felony under Minnesota Statute 609.2247. The maximum penalty listed in the complaint is three years in prison, a $5,000 fine, or both.

The complaint also says prosecutors gave notice that they may seek a tougher sentence. They cited the claim that the felony happened in the presence of a child.

The case was filed in Polk County District Court, which is part of Minnesota’s Ninth Judicial District. Public case information may also be viewed through Minnesota Court Records Online.

As in all criminal cases, the charge is an accusation. The defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
