East Grand Forks Man Charged After Motel Threats

EAST GRAND FORKS, Minn. (trfnews.i234.me) — A New York man faces two felony charges following an incident at an East Grand Forks motel.

Matthew Dylan Calla, 23, is charged with two counts of threats of violence.

Each count involves a separate alleged victim, according to a Polk County District Court complaint.

The charges followed an incident on June 26, 2026, at the Plaza Motel.

Repeated 911 Calls Reported

The complaint states Calla first called 911 shortly after 11 a.m.

He reportedly said he feared bears would attack him after hearing growling overnight.

Police spoke with Calla before leaving the motel.

Calla allegedly called 911 again around 12:35 p.m.

He demanded help getting a spare key, according to the complaint.

During another call, Calla allegedly warned there would be a “blood bath.”

He also reportedly said he planned to buy a shotgun.

A motel employee told police Calla had threatened her with a baseball bat.

She also alleged Calla threatened to kill her if she approached him.

A witness said Calla was yelling, kicking doors, and threatening motel management.

Calla reportedly admitted telling a man he would beat him with a baseball bat.

He also told police a bat was inside his room, the complaint states.

Another alleged victim said Calla threatened to strike him in the head.

The man said Calla also pushed against a door and damaged it.

Police arrested Calla and barred him from returning to the motel.

Prosecutors charged him with two violations of Minnesota’s threats-of-violence law.

Each felony count carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison.

Each count also carries a possible $10,000 fine.
