Dr. Garrett Gruwell – Obituary

Dr. Garrett Melvin Gruwell, entered this world on May 27, 1971, in Edina, MN, the son of Ronald Gruwell and Ellen “Bella” Gruwell. He peacefully departed from our midst at the age of 52 on April 6, 2024, leaving behind a profound legacy of love, dedication, and kindness.

In a union that spanned 26 years, Garrett was the devoted husband to Tanya Gruwell. Together, they built a life filled with love, laughter, and cherished memories. Garrett was the loving father of two children, Tabitha Weathers and Kyle Gruwell, who brought immeasurable joy and pride to his life. His role as a grandfather to Paxten Weathers added an extra sparkle to his days.

Garrett found joy in many passions, namely the excitement of coaching and mentoring young athletes in various sports. When he wasn’t coaching, he loved watching UND Fighting Sioux hockey, Minnesota Vikings football, and Minnesota Twins baseball. Alongside sports, he loved exploring new destinations with his beloved wife, interwoven with the harmonious melodies of live concerts. On top of these activities, he enjoyed cooking for his family, infusing every meal with love and cheese.

Garrett dedicated 25 years to education, serving in various positions from teacher to administrator. Driven by his passion for education, Garrett pursued and attained a doctorate degree in education from Grand Canyon University, a testament to his unwavering dedication to personal and professional growth. His commitment to shaping young minds and fostering a love for learning left an indelible mark on the countless students and colleagues whose lives he touched.

He is survived by his loving wife, Tanya Gruwell; daughter, Tabitha (Randi) Weathers; son, Kyle Gruwell; grandson, Paxten Weathers; parents, Ronald (Margo) Gruwell and Ellen “Bella” Gruwell; brother, Tim (Celia) Gruwell; sister, Ronna (Shawn) Schreiner; and he also leaves behind his canine companions, Ollie and Coco, who brought him endless joy.

In his passing, Garrett joins his grandparents, Melvin and Sarah Gruwell, Ralph and Betty Thomas, and his faithful companion, Hershey, in eternal peace.

As we bid farewell to Garrett, let us find solace in the treasured memories we shared and the profound impact he had on our lives.

Though he may no longer  be with us physically, his spirit will continue to guide and inspire all who were fortunate enough to have known him. May his legacy of love and kindness continue to shine brightly in our hearts forevermore.
