Devils Lake Water Main Break Floods Streets, Disrupts Supply Amid Freezing Temperatures

Devils Lake, ND – Utility crews braved -27°F temperatures to repair a catastrophic water main break that flooded streets and disrupted the city’s water system on Monday, Feb. 17. The break, which occurred on a main transmission line near the city’s water tower, caused a major pressure drop and delayed repairs due to inaccessible valves, according to City Engineer Mike Grafsgaard.

Residents were advised to boil water before drinking or cooking, while officials worked to restore normal service. The hospital was redirected to a rural water supply, and authorities urged the public to conserve water and avoid travel in affected areas, including 10th Street Northeast and Fifth Avenue Northeast.

City Administrator Spencer Halvorson praised the brave utility workers battling freezing conditions in knee-deep water to resolve the crisis.
