BECKER COUNTY (trfnews.i234.me) — Prosecutors have charged Natalie June McGinnis Mason, 54, of rural Detroit Lakes.

Court records list two felonies. They include second-degree assault and third-degree assault. The charges are allegations. They must be proven in court.

What court records allege

Deputies and medics were sent out on Oct. 4, 2025, according to the complaint. They went to a home on the 21000 block of County Highway 6. A man there had severe injuries.

Reports described bruising and major trauma to his head and face. The man told responders he was hit on a highway. He said someone dropped him at the property.

An emergency medical flight was requested, records say. Medics later said the wounds did not fit a vehicle strike. An officer reported a large blood stain behind a utility shed. Another possible stain was seen on a mobile home porch.

Search and evidence

Mason was identified as the man’s girlfriend, records say. Investigators obtained a search warrant for her mobile home. They reported blood on a couch, a wall, and the ceiling. They also reported signs of attempted cleanup.

A trash bag was missing from an indoor can, the complaint says. Investigators noted Mason used gray-black trash bags. Search teams then checked nearby dumpsters. They reported a bleach bottle in a gray-black bag.

They also reported a rolled rug, bloody rags, and bloody Swiffer pads. A bloody red cooler was also listed in the dumpsters, according to records.

Interviews

Mason was interviewed after the search, court records say. She said the man assaulted her earlier that morning. She said she woke her cousin, Calvin Dean Basswood. Basswood has also been charged in the case.

Investigators say Mason first avoided details about the man’s injuries. They later say she admitted Basswood “roughed up” the man.

In a Nov. 5 interview, the man gave another account. He said he fought with Basswood. He said Mason struck him in the head with a baseball bat. He said Basswood later hit him with the bat too. He said he did not have a knife.

The man was treated at Sanford Medical Center Fargo, records say. He needed surgery for head injuries. He was released a few days later.

Warrant issued

Prosecutors say Mason stayed in contact after the incident. They say she later could not be found. They also say she was not served with a subpoena. A warrant was issued on Dec. 18, 2025, records show. Her location was listed as unknown.
