Becker County (trfnews.i234.me) – A Detroit Lakes man has been sentenced for misdemeanor domestic assault following a violent incident in which he was accused of choking his girlfriend, according to Becker County District Court records.
Owen Allen Bergstrom, 20, was originally charged with felony domestic assault by strangulation, but that charge was dismissed as part of a plea agreement.
The incident occurred on June 30, 2024, when officers with the Detroit Lakes Police Department responded to a domestic assault call at a residence in the city.
According to court documents:

The victim told officers that Bergstrom, her boyfriend, woke up and rolled on top of her.

When she pushed him away, Bergstrom allegedly began punching her, then choked her to the point she couldn’t breathe.

Officers observed a scratch mark on her neck, and the woman reported being very scared.
On June 24, Judge Michelle Lawson sentenced Bergstrom to:

90 days in the Becker County Jail, with 4 days credit for time served and 80 days stayed for two years

Two years of supervised probation
Probation conditions include:

No possession or use of firearms, ammunition, explosives, drugs, or alcohol

Compliance with a domestic no-contact order

Completion of a domestic abuse batterer’s intervention program
Bergstrom was also ordered to pay a $500 fine and $85 in court fees.
