Becker County (trfnews.i234.me) – A Detroit Lakes man has been sentenced after reaching a plea agreement in a domestic assault case that initially included more serious charges.
Casey Spike Bybee, 33, was sentenced in Becker County District Court to 90 days in jail, with 85 days stayed and credit for five days served, on a misdemeanor domestic assault conviction. A felony charge of domestic assault by strangulation and a second misdemeanor assault charge were dismissed as part of the plea deal.
March 6 Incident
According to court records, the incident occurred on the afternoon of March 6, 2025. Bybee allegedly assaulted his live-in girlfriend after demanding she delete videos she had taken of him abusing her. Even after the videos were deleted, he refused to return her phone and also took her son’s phone.
When the woman tried to retrieve it, Bybee reportedly pushed her to the floor and strangled her, later hitting her in the head, pressing his knee against her throat, and yanking her by the hair in front of her son.
An officer later observed red marks on the woman’s chest and neck, scratches, and a bleeding wound on her ear.
Bybee denied strangling the woman, instead accusing her of attacking him with a screw. He provided a video of part of the confrontation, which showed him yelling at the woman, telling her to leave, and daring her to hit him before the clip ended in a physical altercation.
The woman’s son corroborated her account, telling police he saw Bybee pull his mother by the hair.
Sentencing Conditions
On July 25, 2025, Judge Gretchen Thilmony handed down the sentence, which also includes:

-
