Crookston Man Faces Felony Drug Charge Near School

Crookston, Minnesota (trfnews.i234.me) — Tuffy Brian Schulz faces a felony drug charge in Polk County District Court.

Schulz is charged with a third-degree controlled substance crime for possession in a prohibited zone.

The charge was filed under Minnesota Statute 152.023. The complaint alleges the substance was methamphetamine.

The location was an apartment building on Barrette Street in Crookston.

Authorities say the property is across the street from Highland Elementary School.

The complaint alleges Schulz possessed methamphetamine within 300 feet of the school property.

Minnesota law provides enhanced penalties for certain drug offenses committed in protected areas.

The felony charge carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.

It also carries a possible fine of up to $250,000.

According to the complaint, police were called around 7:25 a.m.

A caller reported a man causing a disturbance inside an apartment laundry room.

Officers found Schulz inside the building, according to the court filing.

The complaint says he was moving constantly and appeared to be in pain.

Police requested medical help because of his behavior.

The complaint says his speech was slurred and difficult to understand.

Authorities then learned Schulz was on supervised probation.

His conditions included avoiding alcohol and non-prescribed controlled substances.

Those conditions also included random testing and searches.

The complaint says police found a nearly empty vodka bottle in the laundry room.

However, a preliminary breath test showed a reading of .000.

Probation officials requested a search of Schulz’s property, according to the complaint.

Police then found a glass pipe in his pants pocket.

Investigators field-tested the pipe.

The test indicated the presence of methamphetamine, according to the complaint.

A urine sample was collected the following day.

A field test indicated methamphetamine, amphetamine, and THC, the filing states.

Court records say Schulz remains on supervised probation from an earlier controlled substance case.

The complaint also lists several previous convictions in his criminal history.

The new case is Polk County Court File No. 60-CR-26-950.
