Crookston Man Faces Cocaine and DWI Charges

Crookston (trfnews.i234.me) — Drake Thomas Lord faces felony drug and misdemeanor DWI charges after a July 28 traffic stop.

A Polk County criminal complaint identifies Lord, 21, as the defendant. The case was filed in Minnesota’s Ninth Judicial District.

The court file number is 60-CR-26-1064.

Early Morning Traffic Stop

Police reported seeing Lord driving a gray 2003 sedan on South Broadway around 3:30 a.m.

The complaint says the vehicle had an unusually loud exhaust. Police stopped the sedan after observing it near Landslide Park.

The complaint places the vehicle within the state’s defined park zone.

Police identified Lord through his Minnesota driver’s license. They reported bloodshot eyes, watery eyes, slurred speech, and slow movements.

Lord denied using drugs or alcohol, according to the complaint.

He later mentioned possible ethylene glycol poisoning from antifreeze exposure.

Police asked Lord to complete field sobriety tests. The complaint says he did not complete those tests satisfactorily.

Police arrested Lord on suspicion of impaired driving. A search of the vehicle followed the arrest.

Police reported finding a rolled $20 bill and a small plastic bag.

The bag contained 0.9 grams of white powder, according to the complaint.

A field test showed a presumptive positive result for cocaine.

The substance was sent to the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension for confirmation.

Police also obtained a warrant for a urine sample.

That sample reportedly tested presumptively positive for cocaine and THC.

The sample was also sent for laboratory confirmation. Final laboratory results were not included in the complaint.

Prosecutors charged Lord with third-degree controlled substance possession within a prohibited zone.

The charge is a felony under Minnesota Statute 152.023.

The complaint alleges Lord possessed cocaine near Landslide Park.

The felony count carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison. It also carries a possible $250,000 fine.

Lord also faces fourth-degree driving while impaired.

The charge alleges cocaine or a metabolite was present in his body.

The DWI charge falls under Minnesota Statute 169A.20.

The complaint lists a maximum sentence of 90 days in jail. It also lists a possible $1,000 fine.
