Clay County (trfnews.i234.me) – The Clay County Sheriff’s Office has released body camera video of a deadly SWAT standoff in Moorhead earlier this month.

According to officials, the incident began on August 11 after Moorhead police responded to a domestic assault call. Two brothers, Nathan Heiberg, 42, and Lucas Heiberg, 41, barricaded themselves inside an apartment with two children, ages 5 and 6. Law enforcement confirmed the standoff lasted nearly two hours before the situation turned violent.

The body camera video shows the Red River Regional SWAT team approaching the apartment around 10:30 p.m. Gunfire erupted as officers neared the door. A second round of shots was heard just 13 seconds after the first. Bullet holes can be seen in the apartment door as officers ordered the suspects not to move.

Authorities confirmed both Nathan and Lucas Heiberg were killed in the exchange of gunfire. The two children inside were safely rescued and were not harmed.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) has identified three Fargo police officers on the SWAT team as firing during the incident. All three are currently on standard administrative leave while the BCA conducts its investigation. Learn more about the BCA investigation process.

The release of the video has raised questions in the community about how the standoff escalated. It remains unclear who fired the first shot. Officials say the investigation will determine whether the officers’ actions were justified.

Community members and advocates continue to monitor the case closely as the BCA’s findings are awaited. Clay County Sheriff’s Office says more updates will be provided when available.
