Clay County (trfnews.i234.me) — Drivers in west central Minnesota are being urged to slow down after a slippery stretch of Interstate 94 sent vehicles into the ditch east of Moorhead on Monday afternoon.
Slippery I-94 Conditions Near Moorhead
According to information from west central Minnesota authorities, crews responded to I-94 near milepost 4, just east of Moorhead, at about 3:30 p.m. on December 8.
Officials reported slippery roads and increasing wind in the area.
Vehicles slid into the ditch, but there were no injury reports connected to the incident.
Responders asked drivers to slow down, give extra room, and watch for squad cars and tow trucks.
Officials: Headlights On, Move Over, Slow Down
Authorities stressed that drivers should have both headlights and taillights on while traveling in low-visibility or slick conditions.
They also reminded motorists of Minnesota’s “move over” law, which requires drivers to move over a lane or slow down when passing stopped emergency or maintenance vehicles.
Crews were assisting motorists in the ditch along I-94 and said passing traffic needed to reduce speed.
Higher speeds on slippery pavement leave drivers with little time to react to stopped vehicles or sudden lane changes.
Winter Travel Safety in West Central Minnesota
Officials said travelers should check road and weather conditions before starting any trip.
Real-time travel information is available through the Minnesota 511 road conditions map.
Drivers can also review winter driving tips from the Minnesota Department of Public Safety.
Basic safety steps include slowing down on snow or ice, increasing following distance, and avoiding sudden braking.
Officials say even when pavement looks clear, patchy ice can cause quick loss of control.
Authorities in west central Minnesota urged anyone traveling on I-94 and nearby highways to use extra care as winds pick up and roads remain slick.
They repeated a simple message for drivers: slow down, move over, and give crews room to work.
