Cass Lake Man Charged With Felony Domestic Assault
Cass County (trfnews.i234.me) — A Cass Lake man is facing a felony domestic assault charge following a reported family dispute in July.
Thomas Joseph Goodshield Jr., born April 9, 1996, has been charged in Cass County District Court with felony domestic assault.
The charge stems from an alleged incident on July 12, 2026, in Cass Lake. Court documents state the incident involved a family member.
Alleged Assault Reported in Cass Lake
According to the criminal complaint, law enforcement responded to a disturbance call around 1:16 a.m.
The reported incident happened at a residence on John Moose Drive in Cass Lake.
When authorities arrived, the alleged victim was outside the residence. She reported that Goodshield had struck her in the face.
The complaint states she also reported that her phone was damaged during the incident.
Investigators said the two individuals had been arguing before the alleged assault occurred.
The complaint alleges Goodshield continued following the victim during the dispute. It states the confrontation moved from inside the home to outside.
The victim reported soreness and a hot feeling on her face after the alleged strike.

Prior Domestic Violence Convictions Listed
Court documents state Goodshield has two prior qualified domestic violence-related convictions within the past 10 years.
The complaint lists a 2025 conviction involving misdemeanor domestic assault.
It also lists a 2023 conviction involving another domestic assault-related offense.
Because of the prior convictions, prosecutors filed the current case as a felony charge.
The charge is listed under Minnesota Statute 609.2242.4.
If convicted, the charge carries a possible sentence of up to five years in prison, a fine of up to $10,000, or both.

Goodshield’s case is filed in Cass County District Court in Minnesota’s Ninth Judicial District.
The complaint states the allegations are based on probable cause. A criminal charge is not a conviction.
The defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
