Turtle Lake Township (trfnews.i234.me) – A Cass County deputy was wounded and a male suspect died after a gunfire exchange during a foot chase Sunday evening in rural Walker.

The incident began at 4:37 p.m. The Cass County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call that reported gunshots near homes. The call came from the area of Old Agency Drive and Onigum Road Northwest in Turtle Lake Township.

Deputies arrived and began to check the area. A short time later, they saw a man walking in the 8000 block of Onigum Road Northwest. When deputies tried to speak with him, the man ran. Deputies chased him on foot.

During the chase, gunfire was exchanged. A deputy was hit by a round. Emergency crews were called in, and the wounded deputy was airlifted to a Fargo hospital. The deputy’s condition was not released as of late Sunday.

The male suspect was struck during the gunfire. He died at the scene. His name has not been released.

Body cameras were active during the incident. The deputies involved were placed on critical incident leave. This is standard after a shooting.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is now leading the case. Officials say more details will be released when the investigation allows. For background on BCA investigations, visit the Minnesota BCA website.

Authorities did not release any information about what may have led to the initial gunfire reports. They also did not share how many shots were fired during the chase.

This remains an active investigation. TRF News will continue to follow updates as they are released.
