Cass County (trfnews.i234.me) – Authorities confirm a Cass County deputy was wounded and a male suspect died after an exchange of gunfire late Sunday afternoon east of Walker.
According to Cass County Sheriff Bryan Welk, the incident began at 4:37 p.m. Deputies were sent to the area of Old Agency Drive and Onigum Road Northwest in Turtle Lake Township after a caller reported hearing gunshots near homes.
Deputies arrived and began to investigate the report. A short time later, officers attempted to make contact with a man walking in the 8000 block of Onigum Road Northwest. The man ran from deputies, and a foot chase followed.
During the chase, gunfire was exchanged. Sheriff Welk said a deputy was struck by gunfire and was taken by helicopter to a Fargo hospital for treatment. The deputy’s condition has not been released.
The male suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity has not yet been made public.
Sheriff Welk confirmed that body-worn cameras were active during the incident. The deputies involved have been placed on critical incident leave. This is standard procedure following an officer-involved shooting.
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is now leading the investigation. BCA agents processed the scene Sunday evening and will release further details when available. For more information about BCA investigations, visit the Minnesota Department of Public Safety.
No information has been released about what may have led to the initial gunfire report or how many shots were fired during the chase.
This remains an active and ongoing investigation. TRF News will update this story as more information becomes available.
