Benson County, ND (trfnews.i234.me) – Isaac Hunt’s younger brother has now been charged with second-degree murder in federal court after remains believed to be Hunt’s were found on a family property near St. Michael. The charge against D’Angelo James Hunt was filed on Monday, November 17. The filing included a detailed affidavit from federal investigators outlining the events before Isaac Hunt disappeared from the Spirit Lake Reservation in March of 2024.

According to the affidavit, Isaac Hunt was last seen leaving his father’s home in St. Michael. His father was incarcerated at the time. Isaac Hunt and D’Angelo Hunt were reported to be at the residence together shortly before Isaac disappeared. Investigators interviewed several people who reportedly witnessed troubling behavior during this period.

One unnamed witness told law enforcement they saw videos posted to Isaac Hunt’s Facebook story. The videos allegedly showed D’Angelo Hunt pacing with a knife in his hand. Isaac Hunt can reportedly be heard telling him to “chill out bro” and “relax.” Investigators said this video evidence conflicted with statements later provided by D’Angelo Hunt about the last time he saw his brother.

The affidavit states that D’Angelo Hunt first claimed an injury to his hand was accidental. He later admitted that Isaac Hunt stabbed him during a fight. The investigation also uncovered physical evidence at the father’s home. In early March, a burned carpet remnant stained with dried blood was found outside the residence. Mold prevented DNA testing. However, investigators later located blood inside the home. The blood was tested and was consistent with both D’Angelo and Isaac Hunt.

Those discoveries were made during July 2024. More than a year after Isaac Hunt was reported missing, the case advanced when human remains were discovered on November 15 behind the father’s residence. The items located with the remains included clothing consistent with what Isaac Hunt was last seen wearing. Federal agents say the remains included a skull.

D’Angelo Hunt is accused of killing his brother with “malicious aforethought” but without premeditation. Federal second-degree murder carries a maximum sentence of life in prison. More information about federal homicide statutes can be found at justice.gov.

D’Angelo Hunt’s first federal court appearance is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, November 18. He will appear with the judge in Grand Forks. Other participants will join remotely from Fargo.
