Bemidji Truck Stop Leads to Arrest, Driving Charge

BEMIDJI (trfnews.i234.me) — A traffic stop near Bemidji High School led to the arrest of a local man.

Derrick James Carrier faces a gross misdemeanor charge of driving after cancellation of his driver’s license.

The allegations appear in a Beltrami County District Court complaint involving an October 1, 2026, incident.

Deputy Spots Pickup Near Bemidji Roundabout

According to court documents, a Beltrami County deputy was driving near Division Street and Becida Road around 6:43 p.m.

The deputy noticed a silver GMC pickup stopped near the roundabout.

The driver appeared to resemble someone the deputy knew from previous contacts.

Dispatch confirmed that the person initially suspected had a canceled driver’s license.

The pickup then traveled east on Division Street behind the patrol vehicle.

The deputy pulled onto the shoulder and allowed the truck to pass.

After the truck passed, the deputy activated emergency lights to begin a traffic stop.

The pickup continued eastbound until the deputy activated the patrol vehicle’s siren.

The driver then pulled into a tennis court parking lot near Bemidji High School.

Driver Identified and Arrested

The deputy approached the pickup and found one person inside.

The driver provided a Minnesota identification card identifying him as Derrick James Carrier.

Dispatch then checked Carrier’s driving status and reported that his driving privileges were canceled as inimical to public safety.

That classification means state officials had canceled his driving privileges for public safety reasons.

Dispatch also informed the deputy that Carrier had an active warrant in Beltrami County.

The deputy told Carrier he was under arrest because of the warrant and his driving status.

Carrier was taken to the Beltrami County Jail.

The complaint does not describe any crash or injuries connected to the traffic stop.

Gross Misdemeanor Charge Filed

Prosecutors charged Carrier under Minnesota Statute 171.24, subdivision 5.

The law addresses driving after a license has been canceled or denied as inimical to public safety.

Prosecutors allege Carrier drove despite knowing or having reason to know his driving privileges were canceled.

The gross misdemeanor charge carries a maximum penalty of 364 days in jail, a $3,000 fine, or both.

Complaint Lists Previous Convictions

The criminal complaint also describes Carrier’s previous convictions in Minnesota.

According to court records cited in the complaint, Carrier was convicted of driving after cancellation on May 15, 2026.

That conviction was entered in Beltrami County Court File 04-CR-26-867.

The complaint also lists felony convictions entered on June 16, 2026.

Those convictions involved driving while impaired with certain drugs and fifth-degree drug possession.

Those offenses were recorded under Beltrami County Court File 04-CR-24-1317.

The previous convictions are separate from the latest charge.

No new impaired-driving or drug-possession charge appears in this complaint.

Case Filed in Beltrami County District Court

Carrier’s new case is filed under court number 04-CR-26-2434 in Minnesota’s Ninth Judicial District.

The court document identifies an order of detention.

Additional public case information may be available through Minnesota Court Records Online.

Carrier is presumed innocent of the new charge unless proven guilty in court.
