Bemidji Teen Shoots 3, Suspended His Cell Phone Privileges

Bemidji (trfnews.i234.me) – A 16-year-old Bemidji boy is facing four felony charges after a reported apartment shooting.

The shooting happened on May 7 near 2500 Itasca Loop NW in Bemidji.

According to court documents, officers responded at about 4:45 p.m.

They found three adults who had each been shot.

The charges are only accusations. The teen is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.

Three Adults Injured

Court documents say one victim was shot in the abdomen.

She told authorities the shooter was her son.

She said he was upset after his cell phone privileges were suspended.

A second victim, identified as the teen’s father, was shot in the thigh.

First responders found the bullet had struck an artery.

A tourniquet was used to stop severe bleeding.

A third adult was also shot in the leg.

That victim also needed a tourniquet, according to court documents.

All three victims were stabilized at the scene.

They were then taken to the Sanford Bemidji Emergency Room with critical injuries.

Teen Later Surrendered

The teen allegedly fled after the shooting.

Nearly two hours later, he surrendered at the law enforcement center.

Court documents say the surrender happened without incident.

The teen allegedly admitted he became angry after losing phone privileges.

He also allegedly admitted he took a pistol and shot three people.

Authorities said he claimed he got the firearm by himself.

He said his parents did not know he had obtained it.

The teen also allegedly admitted to hiding the firearm after the shooting.

Court documents say it was hidden under leaves near 15th Street.

The area was near Bemidji Middle School, according to the filing.

Four Felony Counts Filed

The teen is charged with first-degree assault, causing great bodily harm.

He also faces two second-degree assault counts involving a dangerous weapon.

A fourth charge alleges he possessed ammunition, a pistol, or an assault weapon while under 18.

Minnesota court records can be searched through the Minnesota Judicial Branch.

State assault laws are listed by the Minnesota Revisor of Statutes.

The teen’s initial hearing was scheduled for May 14 at the Beltrami County Courthouse.

His mother told the Pioneer the family is focused on recovery.

She said the family is standing together with unconditional love.
