What to know about ice safety

Ice conditions can change fast, even on the same lake.

Current can thin the ice near bridges, channels, and shorelines.

The Minnesota DNR says there is no such thing as 100% safe ice.

The agency urges people to check the thickness often and use caution.

If you fall in, the DNR advises staying calm and turning back toward stronger ice.

Cold water can also cause cold shock and rapid loss of strength.

The National Weather Service warns that cold water can reduce your ability to act fast.
