Beltrami County (trfnews.i234.me) — A Bemidji man now faces a felony charge after a reported threat case in Beltrami County, according to a criminal complaint filed in Ninth Judicial District Court.

Ryan Thomas Newman, 43, of Bemidji, was charged with one count of terroristic threats. The charge alleges reckless disregard of the risk of causing fear in another person. Under Minnesota Statute 609.713, the charge carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison, a $10,000 fine, or both.

Charge Filed In Beltrami County

Court records say the reported incident happened on March 7, 2026, in Bemidji. The complaint was filed in the Minnesota Judicial Branch court records under Beltrami County.

According to the complaint, a woman identified as J.H. told police that Newman threatened to beat and hit her during an incident at a shared residence in Bemidji. The complaint says she told officers she feared he would act on those words.

The complaint also says J.H. reported Newman had become angrier toward her over time. She also reported a past incident in which he allegedly pushed her about a year earlier.

Video Cited In Complaint

The complaint says another person, identified as D.N., gave police a video recording of a FaceTime Messenger call from that same day. In that recording, Newman allegedly made violent threats toward J.H. and another woman.

Investigators said J.H. confirmed she heard those statements. The complaint says she again told officers she feared bodily harm.

Authorities later contacted Newman at the residence, according to the complaint. Court records say he admitted having a phone conversation that morning. However, he said he did not remember making the statements.

The complaint says Newman appeared upset during that contact. He was then arrested and taken to the Beltrami County Jail.

What Happens Next

The complaint states that, while at the jail, Newman made repeated remarks that he needed anger management. The court filing also noted a major size difference between Newman and J.H. That detail was included as part of the probable cause statement.

A criminal complaint contains allegations. It is not a conviction. The case will move through court unless it is dismissed, changed, or resolved by plea or trial.
