Beltrami County (trfnews.i234.me) — a Red Lake woman is facing three charges after a traffic stop in Beltrami County on March 30, according to a criminal complaint filed in Minnesota District Court.
Prosecutors charged Chelsey Dawn May with first-degree DWI, fifth-degree drug possession, and driving after cancellation. The complaint says the case began at about 2:15 a.m. near Pete’s Place South.

What the Complaint Says
According to the complaint, an officer stopped the vehicle after checking the license plate. The registered owner, Chelsey Dawn May, had a canceled license. The complaint also says the vehicle had a brake light problem.
Court records say May showed signs of recent drug use during the stop. The complaint describes lethargy, rapid speech, and problems during field sobriety testing. It also says she told law enforcement she had used cocaine two days earlier.
The complaint says officers arrested May at the scene. During a search of the vehicle, officers reportedly found a small bag with a substance that field tested positive for cocaine. Investigators later obtained a warrant for a blood or urine sample.
Charges Filed
The most serious count is first-degree DWI. Prosecutors say May was in control of a motor vehicle while her body contained a Schedule I or II controlled substance, or its metabolite. The complaint says this charge was enhanced by three prior non-felony DWI convictions within the past 10 years.
May also faces a drug possession charge. Prosecutors allege she possessed a mixture containing cocaine and had a prior conviction under Minnesota drug laws.
The third charge accuses May of driving after her license was canceled as inimical to public safety.
Prior Convictions Listed
The complaint lists several prior convictions tied to May. Those include past DWI offenses, drug possession offenses, receiving stolen property, theft, and giving a false name to a peace officer.
As in all criminal cases, the charges are allegations. May is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
