Becker–Otter Tail: Zebra Mussels Found in Two More Lakes
Becker County (trfnews.i234.me) — The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has confirmed new infestations of invasive zebra mussels in Munson Lake in Becker County and Lake Six in Otter Tail County.
The discovery was first made when a property owner on Munson Lake found zebra mussels attached to a boat lift. DNR staff later confirmed the infestation after finding an adult zebra mussel on a native mussel. Similar findings were made at Lake Six, where mussels were discovered on equipment being removed from the water.
Zebra mussels are an aggressive invasive species that harm Minnesota’s aquatic ecosystems by disrupting food chains, damaging infrastructure, and degrading water quality. Once established, they are extremely difficult to eliminate.
To help stop their spread, the DNR is urging all boaters and lake users to carefully inspect and clean boats, trailers, and water equipment before moving between lakes. State law requires everyone to follow these important steps:
- Drain all water: Drain water from boats and equipment, and keep drain plugs out during transport.
- Dispose of bait properly: Never release live bait into Minnesota waters; place it in the trash.
- Prevent plant transfer: Remove all aquatic plants before leaving any water access area.
- Dry equipment: Allow docks, lifts, or rafts to dry for at least 21 days before moving them to another lake.
The DNR continues to monitor affected lakes and encourages residents to report suspected zebra mussel sightings immediately. For more information on aquatic invasive species prevention, visit the Minnesota DNR Invasive Species Program.
