Becker County (trfnews.i234.me) Two juveniles were rescued Tuesday afternoon after falling through the ice while trying to ice fish on Straight Lake near Osage, Minnesota.
According to the Becker County Sheriff’s Office, the call came in at about 2:51 p.m. The report stated that two juvenile males had gone through the ice on Straight Lake.
Emergency personnel from the Becker County Sheriff’s Office, the dive team, and other area agencies responded. The boys were later identified as 13 and 14 years old.
Officials say the juveniles were sitting in an Otter sled while trying to move across the ice. The ice gave way, and both ended up in the water. They were floating inside the sled when help was called.
The Minnesota DNR was first on scene with a boat. Crews launched at the Straight Lake public access and used the boat to break ice toward the juveniles. A DNR conservation officer and a Hubbard County deputy rode in the boat.
Responders reached the boys, pulled them into the boat, and brought them safely back to shore. The juveniles were checked by EMS and were not injured.
Authorities say the boys had been attempting to ice fish when the incident happened. Becker County Sheriff Todd Glander is now urging everyone to stay off all area lakes.
With recent weather changes, ice conditions can be highly unpredictable. Officials remind people that no ice is ever completely safe, especially early in the season.
