Battle Lake Standoff Ends With Man Fatally Shot
Battle Lake (trfnews.i234.me) — A man was fatally shot by law enforcement following a standoff near Battle Lake.
The incident happened Friday evening at a rural home in Otter Tail County.
Authorities say the man pointed a firearm toward officers before an officer opened fire.
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is now investigating the shooting.
Disturbance Reported at Rural Home
The Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Office responded around 5:47 p.m. Friday.
The call came from the 30000 block of Twin Lakes Road near Battle Lake.
A caller had stopped at the home to check on a relative.
The caller found the home’s door barricaded, according to the sheriff’s office.
A man later came to the door carrying a shotgun.
Authorities say the man pointed the shotgun at the caller.
He allegedly told the caller they were trespassing.
The man then struck the caller with the shotgun’s butt, authorities said.
He allegedly forced the caller into a vehicle before returning inside the home.
The man then barricaded the doors.
SWAT Teams Respond to Standoff
The Otter Tail County SWAT Team responded to the property.
Officers attempted to communicate and negotiate with the man.
During the standoff, authorities say the man fired at an armored SWAT vehicle.
Additional help was requested from Douglas County SWAT and Red River Valley SWAT.
The standoff continued as law enforcement worked to resolve the situation.
Man Fatally Shot by Officer
Authorities say the man eventually came outside the residence.
Preliminary information indicates he then pointed a firearm toward law enforcement.
An officer fired a weapon and struck the man.
Officers and medical personnel immediately provided emergency aid.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
No law enforcement officers were injured during the incident.
The man’s name has not been released.
Authorities said notification of family members must happen before his identity is made public.
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is leading the shooting investigation.
