GRAND FORKS, ND (trfnews.i234.me) – Agristo, a Belgian family-owned potato processing company, has announced plans to construct its first North American facility in Grand Forks, North Dakota. Over the past three years, Agristo has collaborated with local potato growers, conducting trials with European potato varieties. The company had considered various Midwest locations but has now decided to concentrate its efforts on North Dakota. This decision is pending the fulfillment of specific conditions, including securing incentives and finalizing competitive transportation rates with BNSF Railway.
Governor Kelly Armstrong stated that North Dakota, being among the top five potato-producing states and a leader in agricultural innovation, is an ideal location for Agristo’s expansion into North America. He noted that the project is expected to enhance value-added agriculture in the state, boost profitability for potato growers, and strengthen the local economy.
Senator John Hoeven highlighted the project’s significance for North Dakota’s potato growers, mentioning the planned $500 million investment in a 350-acre facility. He emphasized that this development would provide a new local market for high-value crops and acknowledged the collaborative efforts of local officials and industry leaders in bringing the project to fruition.
Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring remarked that Agristo’s decision reflects recognition of the state’s work ethic and innovation. He pointed out that the plant’s proximity to the fertile soils of the Red River Valley would add value to North Dakota’s agricultural sector and create opportunities for producers and the local workforce.
Grand Forks Mayor Brandon Bochenski expressed gratitude towards local farmers and the Northland Potato Growers Association for their contributions over the past three years. He noted that Agristo’s community-oriented and employee-focused culture aligns well with the values of Grand Forks.
Founded in 1986 by childhood friends Antoon Wallays and Luc Raes, Agristo is headquartered in Wielsbeke, Belgium. The company operates six branches worldwide, including locations in Belgium, the Netherlands, France, and India. Currently led by co-CEOs Filip Wallays and Hannelore Raes, Agristo specializes in producing frozen pre-fried French fries and potato specialties, with private label products accounting for 80% of its production volume.
