In Grand Forks County, a New Rockford man with a history of fleeing law enforcement has been sentenced to four years in prison following a high-speed chase in May 2024. Kyle Kahalehili Maez-Schaack, 32, pleaded guilty on March 28 to multiple charges, including reckless endangerment and fleeing a police officer.

The incident occurred on May 23, 2024, when a deputy attempted to stop Maez-Schaack’s vehicle for a traffic violation. Instead of complying, he led authorities on a dangerous pursuit, reaching speeds over 100 mph, before crashing into a parked vehicle. He then fled on foot but was apprehended within two hours.

Maez-Schaack’s extensive criminal record includes over 30 arrests, with this being his eighth for fleeing police in six years. At sentencing, he was deemed a habitual offender, resulting in a 10-year sentence with six years suspended. Upon release, he will be on supervised probation for two years and risks serving the remaining six years if he violates any conditions.
