FARGO, N.D. (trfnews.i234.me) – A former Fargo Public Schools staff member appeared in court on Tuesday for a trial concerning criminal charges. Ashley Peterson is accused of sending explicit photos and engaging in an inappropriate relationship with a 17-year-old student. She was terminated from her position as a Behavior Technician at Davies High School in October 2023 when the allegations surfaced.
Jury selection took most of the day, concluding in the afternoon. Opening statements from attorneys outlined their respective cases, and the prosecution introduced its first witness, Heather Cantrell, who reported the incident.
Cantrell testified that Peterson confided in her during a social outing, sharing details about interactions with the student. As a mandated reporter, Cantrell brought the information to social services. Cantrell’s testimony included statements allegedly made by Peterson about the situation.
The prosecution emphasized the importance of the power dynamics between educators and students, presenting this as a key factor in the case. They plan to call additional witnesses, including other school staff, law enforcement, and the alleged victim.
The defense questioned the credibility of witnesses, arguing that Peterson’s actions may have violated school policy but did not constitute criminal behavior. They urged the jury to carefully evaluate the evidence presented.
The trial resumes at 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday. Peterson was also a live-in nanny for Fargo Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Rupak Gandhi, who confirmed her immediate dismissal upon learning of the allegations.
