PARK RAPIDS, Minn. (trfnews.i234.me) – A Detroit Lakes woman faces two felony charges after allegedly leaving Park Rapids Walmart with more than $2,600 in unpaid merchandise.

Angela Elizabeth Johnson, 40, of Detroit Lakes, is charged with third-degree burglary and felony theft in Hubbard County District Court.

According to a criminal complaint, investigators reviewed three transactions involving Walmart’s Scan & Go checkout system.

Police allege Johnson took merchandise valued at a combined $2,669.43 on March 30, 2026.

Police Investigate Multiple Walmart Theft Reports

The investigation began April 30, when Park Rapids police reviewed four reported theft incidents involving Johnson.

According to court documents, Walmart security provided information about three transactions on March 30.

Investigators also learned Johnson had previously received a trespass notice banning her from Walmart stores.

The complaint states Johnson signed the notice June 26, 2025, and the ban was effective for two years.

First Transaction Involves $1,868 in Merchandise

Investigators reviewed surveillance footage showing Johnson approaching a register with a shopping cart full of merchandise.

According to the complaint, Johnson had Walmart’s Scan & Go application open on her cellphone.

She allegedly scanned a checkout barcode but did not complete payment for the full cart.

Instead, Johnson reportedly paid for water, lemonade, and grass seed.

Police allege she then left with additional merchandise worth $1,868.43 that had not been purchased.

Second Transaction Adds Another $507

During a second transaction, Johnson allegedly approached a register and scanned the Scan & Go barcode.

According to investigators, she contacted a checkout employee who canceled the transaction.

Johnson then reportedly reopened the application and scanned the barcode again.

However, the complaint alleges she never completed the payment process.

After the register timed out, Johnson allegedly left with $507.50 in unpaid merchandise.

Third Transaction Involves Unscanned Items

Police also reviewed surveillance footage of a third transaction that same day.

Johnson allegedly attempted to use Scan & Go before a store employee canceled the transaction.

She then purchased a soda and an energy drink.

According to court documents, Johnson reopened the application and scanned additional merchandise in her cart.

Investigators allege she paid for some items but left with other merchandise that had not been scanned.

The unpaid merchandise from that transaction was valued at $293.50.

Three Transactions Total $2,669.43

Investigators calculated the alleged unpaid merchandise from the three transactions as follows:

  • First transaction: $1,868.43
  • Second transaction: $507.50
  • Third transaction: $293.50

Total alleged loss: $2,669.43.

Police used Walmart security footage and transaction records to support the allegations.

Previous Walmart Ban Leads to Burglary Charge

The complaint states Johnson had been banned from Walmart stores before the March incidents.

Prosecutors allege her return to the Park Rapids location violated that notice.

Johnson faces third-degree burglary under Minnesota Statute 609.582.

She also faces felony theft under Minnesota Statute 609.52.

Each felony carries a maximum possible sentence of five years in prison, a $10,000 fine, or both.

Hubbard County Court Case

The case is filed in Minnesota’s Ninth Judicial District under court file number 29-CR-26-926.

The complaint lists a summons for Johnson.

Court records also reference previous theft convictions and separate pending charges.

The current allegations have not been proven in court. Johnson is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
