St. Paul, Minnesota (trfnews.i234.me) — Minnesota Governor Tim Walz says he will not run for a third term in office.
Walz announced his decision in a public statement. He said he wants to focus on the work of governing. He said Minnesota faces major challenges in 2026.
Walz: “I ran for this job so I could do this job.”
In his statement, Walz reflected on the past year. He described 2025 as a difficult year for Minnesota. He said it ended on a “sour note.”
Walz pointed to ongoing fraud cases tied to state programs. He said state leaders have made progress. He also said political voices are trying to use the crisis for gain.
Walz also criticized President Donald Trump and allies. He said they want to turn Minnesotans against each other. He said their goal is to make the state “colder” and “meaner.”
Walz said he does not want to spend his time campaigning. He said he wants to spend his time working. He wrote that he is leaving the race with “zero sadness” and “zero regret.”

What happens next
Walz remains governor through the end of his current term. The 2026 election will now be an open race for Democrats and Republicans.
State leaders are expected to share more details soon. That includes possible candidates from both parties. Walz did not endorse a successor in his statement.
