Grand Forks Culver’s to host Honor Flight fundraising events – Obituary

GRAND FORKS – Culver’s restaurant will donate a portion of its sales from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 29, and Friday, Nov. 1, to the Veterans Honor Flight of North Dakota/Minnesota.

The Honor Flights are dedicated solely for the purpose of taking veterans, their caregivers and volunteers, including medical and other health care professionals, on a three-day, all-expenses-paid trip to visit war memorials and other historic landmarks in Washington, D.C.

Two Honor Flights are expected to leave from Grand Forks on Easter Sunday morning next spring, said Don Roberts, of Grand Forks. He and his wife Betty are very active in organizing fundraising events in this area.

At the Culver’s event, funds will also be raised through the sale of raffle tickets for a quilt, as well as hats and other items at the Honor Flight table in the lobby of the restaurant, 3451 32nd Ave. S.

Volunteers will also be selling kitchen hotpads and machine-washable Swiffer floor-mop covers that have been made and donated by members of University Lutheran Church.

The quilt to be raffled is one of about a half-dozen that have been donated by Sandi Brantl of Warroad, Minnesota, Roberts said.

The quilt will be on display at the Culver’s fundraisers next week. Sewn with a patriotic theme, it is about 66 inches by 78 inches, Betty Roberts said. The drawing for the quilt will likely take place after Veterans Day and the winner will be contacted by phone.

Proceeds from past raffles for Brantl’s quilts have made it possible for two veterans to go on the Honor Flight, Don Roberts said.

Applications for the Honor Flight are being accepted from WWII, Korean and Vietnam veterans, as well as terminally ill veterans. Top priority is given to WWII and terminally ill veterans.
