BISMARCK, N.D. (trfnews.i234.me) — Wildfires continue to devastate western North Dakota, claiming the life of 26-year-old Johannes Nicolaas Van Eeden of South Africa and leaving another individual critically injured. The fires, which began over the weekend, have spread across thousands of acres in eastern Williams County, prompting an extensive emergency response involving more than eighteen local and regional agencies.
The largest active fire, burning south of Highway 2 between Ray and Tioga, continues to flare up, and crews are working diligently to manage hotspots. Governor Doug Burgum has declared a statewide fire emergency and praised the efforts of first responders, who saved the town of Mandaree overnight from the Bear Den Fire, which has scorched over 25,000 acres.
“We extend our deepest sympathies to the loved ones of the deceased and continue to support those affected by these devastating fires,” Governor Burgum said.
As of October 6, firefighters are battling multiple blazes, including the Elkhorn Fire near Grassy Butte and the Ray/Alamo Fire. Containment efforts are ongoing as damage assessments continue.
