Aneta Woman Faces 4 Felonies After Driving Toward Children
Aneta, North Dakota (trfnews.i234.me) — Ashley Jerome faces four felony charges after an incident involving children in Aneta.
Jerome, 34, is charged with four counts of reckless endangerment with extreme indifference.
The charges were filed in Nelson County District Court following an incident reported September 26.
Deputies allege Jerome drove toward a group of children following a dispute involving her son’s bicycle.
Bike Dispute Leads to Confrontation
According to the probable cause declaration, neighborhood children had hidden a boy’s bike as a prank.
The bike was later returned, according to the court filing.
A witness said Jerome later drove to the area where the children were gathered.
The witness said Jerome yelled at the group.
One child then ran inside crying, according to the declaration.
Another witness reported seeing Jerome’s vehicle travel quickly toward the children with its high beams on.
That witness estimated the vehicle was traveling between 55 and 60 mph.
He said the vehicle swerved and braked within four to six feet of the children.
The witness said he stepped in front of the group before Jerome swerved around him.
Another person told deputies he believed the vehicle was going to hit him.
Jerome Gives Deputies Her Account
Jerome later told deputies her son came to her workplace after the bicycle dispute.
She said her son reported another child had taken his bike and threatened him.
Jerome said she left work and drove around looking for the children.
She acknowledged speeding toward the group because she wanted to learn what happened.
Jerome disputed witness estimates of her speed.
She estimated she was traveling between 35 and 40 mph.
The declaration says Jerome appeared remorseful while speaking with deputies.
She told investigators she was upset because she believed her son was being bullied.
Four Felony Charges Filed
Jerome was arrested and taken to the Lake Region Law Enforcement Center.
She was later released after signing a promise to appear in court on October 24.
