Tammy Duursma Named NDSU Cheer Team Coach

FARGO, N.D. – Tammy Duursma has been named cheer team coach at North Dakota State University, NDSU senior associate athletic director Colleen Heimstead announced Tuesday, April 23.

Originally from Bismarck, N.D., Duursma has 20 years of teaching and coaching experience, including two years as an assistant coach for the NDSU cheer team from 2004 to 2006.

“It is a pleasure to announce Tammy Duursma as our next head coach of the NDSU cheer team,” Heimstead said. “She is an NDSU alum and former cheer team member with great passion for NDSU and cheerleading. Tammy is looking forward to selecting the 2024-25 team and developing them into a strong, cohesive group. We are excited about the 2024-25 cheer team.”

Tryouts for the 2024-25 NDSU cheer team will be Friday, May 10, and Saturday, May 11, at the Bentson Bunker Fieldhouse. Registration for tryouts is available online at GoBison.com/cheer. Before returning to NDSU, Duursma headed the cheerleading program for the Bismarck Public School District, where she was a physical education teacher since 2009 with classes at the elementary, middle and high school level. She was also the head cheerleading coach for the University of Mary in Bismarck from 2017 to 2021.

Duursma graduated from NDSU in 2005 with a bachelor’s degree in physical education. She was a four-year member and three-year captain of the NDSU cheer team.

She earned a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction from St. Catherine University in 2015.
